The manufacturing company: Valsts elektrotehniskā fabrika or VEF was founded in 1919, right after Latvia declared its independence. Before WW II, VEF manufactured large variety of goods, including Minox - then the world's smallest camera. After the second occupation of Latvia in 1945 by Soviet Union, VEF was the leading communication technology producer in the Soviet Union. Additionally, VEF was the largest factory in Latvian SSR.
Nowadays the area of VEF quarter has been transformed into mixed-use area that has multiple uses:

- smaller factories
