At the end of the 19th Century, the neighborhood of Tornakalns emerged. The neighborhood got its name from old tower (ENG: tower = LV: tornis). Translated into English, the neighborhood literal meaning would be "Towermountain" (ENG: mountain = LV: kalns). Most of the buildings that we can see nowadays were built after the 1812. In this year the Pardaugava (LV: Pārdaugava), an area were Tornakalns is situated, was mostly burned down due to a fire. In the first half of the 19th century there neighborhood experienced a rapid construction boom - around 1000 wooden houses were built in Tornakalns,
