Located in the northern part of Riga city, Sakandaugava (word combination from Latvian language: Redaugava) was an active part of the city from the 18th century. Sarkandaugava got its name because it is a smaller part of river Daugava. We can definitely say that Sarkandaugava is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Riga, that somehow has managed to save a low key atmosphere.

Surprisingly the neighborhood has plenty of old residential houses. Besides that, multiple manufacturing factories were located in the neighborhood of Sarkandaugava. For example one of the most famous Latvian beer breweries Aldaris (Waldschlößchen) established in 1865, is originally from Sarkandaugava.

The neighborhood was a host of many famous and large volume factories. Maybe this is the reason why Sarkandaugava has one of the most active communities in Riga, protecting the interests of local residents.

ACCESSIBILITY

Taking into consideration the manufacturing past of neighborhood and closeness to river Daugava, the whole transport network is more chaotic than in other neighborhoods. The port area that is located in the neighborhood is not doing any big favors to improve the transport system. With its transport arteries extending all over the neighborhood the business is playing a big role in the neighborhood development tendencies.
From the positive side, the neighborhood offers plenty of public transport opportunities. Similarly as in other neighborhoods in Riga, Sarkandaugava offers public transportation of - tram, trolley, bus and minibus.​​​​​​​

In some cases, you can even find residential apartments cheaper than in so-called sleeping neighborhoods like Purvciems and Plavnieki (Pļavnieki). With the additional renovation projects within the neighborhood, Sarkandaugava will increase in demand. A large portion of residential apartment buildings in Sarkandaugava is made of wood which makes renting or buying apartment cheaper than in case if the building is made out of bricks. You can probably find a cheaper apartment for rent our sale then in most of the neighborhoods in Riga. The advantage is the closeness to the city center of Riga. Price fluctuations are not commonly found in this neighborhood.
